What Is Your Why?

What is Your Why?

Sometimes, all people need is a helping hand.

That’s where we come in.

“We are all here to make a difference. While every colleague, employee, client, and friend who walks through that front door of our office had a different path that led here, it is our job to step in and help them in their journey,” said Kenya Freeman, Workwell Industry’s CEO and President. “We are here to make a lasting change in their lives."

Workwell’s mission is to create jobs for people with disabilities and others who experience barriers to employment, while also addressing other needs they may have, such as assistance with food, clothes, and shelter. We create a positive work environment for anyone looking for a job all while maintaining our legacy as a premier vendor in our services.

The task isn’t easy.

“I remind everyone to remember their ‘why,’” Freeman said. “Our job is challenging, but we get to be the ones helping people to change their path and look forward to a brighter future.”

“ feel the world is a better place when people are being supported,” said Sean Dillon, Workwell’s logistics manager. “I have seen people who are struggling and cannot find the means to be successful, due to their circumstances, regardless of how hard they tried to fix them. That is where we step in and help them get on their feet.”

“We are all products of our environment,” said Jessica Fink, Workwell’s compliance and regulatory manager. “We cannot control the things that happen to us, but we all have a choice to become aware of our actions and choose to break the cycle and become the best version of ourselves. I was able to break my cycle and overcome the obstacles I had in front of me. I could not have done it without the help of a few great people in my life that saw my potential and drive to be better each day.”

Fink’s “why” is the heart of what we do.

“If I can be the person who gives others the opportunity to take care of their loved ones and change their environment, that reason is enough for me to be here,” she said.

Whatever your “why” was when you chose us, either as a team member or a customer, thank you for being a part of our mission here at Workwell.

Non-profit Workwell Industries Welcomes New President

LOUISVILLE, KY: Workwell Industries, a nonprofit which hires individuals with barriers to employment, is pleased to announce that Kenya Freeman has been named as President and Chief Executive Officer. Freeman’s appointment follows his stint as Interim President/CEO after the retirement of Phil Berry.

Freeman has more than 25 years of diverse operational experiences involving transportation and logistics, inventory control, order kitting, and fulfillment and distribution. He has served at Workwell since 2017 as director and general manager.

“Kenya is the right choice for leading Workwell into the future,” said Thomas Wobbe, Workwell’s chairman of the board. “His heart for our community and mission is strong, and his extensive experience prepares him to extraordinarily serve our staff and our clients.”

“I was born and raised in Louisville, so it is a dream come true to be the new leader of this community-based organization,” said Freeman. “For the last four years, being the director and general manager, Workwell has held a special place in my heart. Now, as Workwell’s president and CEO, I will continue with the same passion and energy that has contributed to our success so far.”

In his earlier role, Freeman led Workwell to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness through bringing industry-renowned organization systems to the nonprofit’s warehouse setup. Not only did this increase speed and quality for clients, but it also allowed Workwell’s staff to gain even more transferable job-training skills. Freeman embodies the mission of Workwell to assist those who have barriers to employment. Workers on the production floor say he always takes the time to encourage their strengths and provide opportunities for growth and development.

“It is very rewarding and humbling for me to have an occupation that has positive impacts within the lives of so many in this community,” said Freeman.

Before joining Workwell, Freeman had been responsible for operations at FedEx. He then worked in warehousing, distribution, and fulfillment in Louisville before coming to Workwell as Director of Operations (2017) and General Manager (2020). He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management with honors from Sullivan University.

Workwell CEO Announces Retirement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: May 4, 2021

LOUISVILLE, KY: After almost two decades of service to Workwell Industries, the nonprofit organization’s President and CEO, Phil Berry, is retiring May 31.

“For nearly 20 years, Phil has served our community with great passion and dedication to help others overcome barriers to employment,” said Thomas Wobbe, Workwell Board Chairman. “Through his selfless hard work, Phil has improved the lives of countless individuals, and for that, all of us at Workwell are extremely grateful.”

During Berry’s career at Workwell, he guided the organization through numerous changes, including a rebranding in 2016 to develop the Workwell name and brand of today. A champion for Workwell’s mission, he was dedicated to providing meaningful work and job training for those facing barriers to employment. Under his leadership, Workwell improved Foreign Trade Zone status, increased capital, and expanded warehousing capabilities, all of which provided greater service for client partners and even more specialized job training opportunities for employees.

Berry has been working closely with the board of directors to develop a leadership transition plan to ensure the continued success, mission, growth, and quality service of Workwell Industries. Kenya Freeman, is currently Interim President at Workwell, and after a search in the coming months, the Board of Directors will name the new President and CEO of Workwell. Phil Berry will stay on as President Emeritus with a position on the Board to support the transition.

“Under Phil’s leadership, Workwell Industries pulled through some of its most challenging days,” said Freeman. “The community has benefited from his hard work and efforts, and he has led Workwell to a prosperous future for its employees.”

Sean Dillon: Helping Workwell Make Happy Customers

As Warehouse Manager at Workwell Industries, Sean Dillon enjoys helping his team overcome challenges. Overseeing forklift safety, shipping and receiving, and inventory operations is a big part of his job, but what he loves most is developing other people along the way. At Workwell, he helps train and support team members that would typically have trouble finding employment elsewhere.

Workwell Industries gives me the opportunity to help people turn their lives around and be successful,” says Sean. “Whether the individual grows with the company or grows personally and professionally and is able to secure a better position elsewhere, it is fulfilling to know that I helped them along in their journey.”

Organized Warehouse = Efficient Workflow

Sean applies his logistics expertise in a way that helps others learn, grow, and succeed. He helped Workwell move from high risk to low risk through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s risk assessment, strengthening the organization’s international supply chain. He is also dedicated to the finer details of making sure accurate orders deliver on time to best serve customers’ needs. He supports his team members in learning what it takes to create an organized warehouse with efficient workflow, and managers and customers have taken note.

“When daytoday operations run with satisfied customers and minimal interruptions, I know all the hard work and effort is paying off,” Sean says. “I want to help leave the world a better place than I found it.”

When he is not working, Sean loves traveling, playing video games, and cheering on Philadelphia sports.
